- 1:50Tech/AI Corner: /AI Product Updates/inc. Gemini/Notebook LM, GPT, | Surveillance Tech/Flock • Steve Lipson provided updates on new ChatGPT features, including enhancements to the website, mobile app, and voice mode. • The committee also discussed an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on Flock Safety cameras, including how automated license plate readers are used to identify travel patterns and broader questions about data retention, privacy, and appropriate use of the technology.
- 2:00Guest Speaker: Gerry Le Londe Berg — Age Tech/Longevity Summit Report • Gerry La Londe-Berg presented highlights from the AgeTech/Longevity Summit, summarizing key breakout sessions and major takeaways. • Topics included consumer advocacy, ethical standards for artificial intelligence, and the distinction between healthspan and lifespan. • The committee discussed how AI tools can become more accessible, practical, and safe for everyday use by older adults.

- 2:40AI: Policies & Relevant Applications • The committee discussed emerging AI policies, including concerns raised by the California Senior Legislature (CSL) regarding AI-generated inaccuracies and hallucinations. Members noted that AI-generated content should be carefully reviewed, particularly for legislative proposals and citations. • The discussion also covered differences between AI systems, including closed and open models, and how their access to information can affect reliability and accuracy. • Members discussed the committee’s broader role in evaluating AI use within Contra Costa County and identifying opportunities to provide recommendations on responsible and effective implementation.
- 2:45CSL Update SB 971, discussion: Conversations with Supervisors • Steve Lipson provided an update on SB 971 (Older Adult Education Bill), noting that the bill has passed every committee hearing unanimously and is awaiting an Assembly floor vote before potentially advancing to the Governor. The only formal opposition came from community college organizations, primarily over jurisdictional concerns, and no testimony was presented in opposition during committee hearings. • The committee discussed how Contra Costa County is well positioned to implement programs supported by SB 971, recognizing the contributions of Steve and Carol in advancing technology education opportunities for older adults. • Members also discussed broader challenges to implementing technology programs for older adults, including equity, access, and the time required for statewide and local implementation.
- 3:05Committee goals assessment • The committee reviewed progress on its Area Plan goals and confirmed that both current objectives remain in progress. A brief status update on these goals will be reported at the next ACOA Genera Meeting. • Members discussed Goal 2, which involves developing transportation infographics, and considered whether ACOA may use AI-generated graphics. The committee agreed to confirm with Tracy before moving forward. The committee discussed changing its regular meeting schedule to the first Thursday of each month from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. in the Corner Conference Room, starting in January.

- 1:45Public Comment • Jill Kleiner shared that she used ChatGPT to help create a flyer for her father and found it to be an efficient and useful tool. While she noted a few minor errors, such as a misspelled last name, she felt the overall result was effective. • Gerry La Londe-Berg announced that the California Commission on Aging will meet in Berkeley on August 24 and noted that additional information is available on the Commission’s website. The committee also discussed potentially adding the meeting to Glenda’s events list, pending Tracy’s approval.
- 1:40Approve minutes from June meeting • The motion carried unanimously with one correction. • A correction was made to the previous meeting minutes to note that the referenced bill had gained support from AARP, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the California Association of Adult Day Services.
